The Misty Plateau of Wonders

Horton Plains National Park

Located at over 2,100 meters above sea level, Horton Plains is a windswept plateau of grassy plains, cloud forests, and rare wildlife. It’s one of the most scenic and ecologically significant areas in Sri Lanka’s central highlands. The park’s star attraction is World’s End, a dramatic 870-meter cliff offering awe-inspiring views over tea estates and forests — especially breathtaking on a clear morning. Another highlight is Baker’s Falls, a beautiful waterfall surrounded by fern-filled woodlands. The park shelters endemic species such as the sambar deer, purple-faced langur, and rare birds like the Sri Lanka whistling thrush. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Central Highlands, it plays a crucial role in biodiversity conservation and is the source of several major rivers. Its blend of mysterious beauty, rare flora and fauna, and panoramic views makes Horton Plains a truly otherworldly experience.
